  • The simplest way to avoid jet lag is to adjust your sleep cycle a week before you travel. If you’re heading to the east, sleep an hour earlier than you would every day, and if you’re heading west, sleep an hour later.
  • If you’re stressed before you travel, the jet lag’s going to hit you a lot worse. So, eat healthy, exercise and get enough rest.
  • Wrap up your packing ahead of time. Last-minute rushing leads to unwarranted stress, thus worsening the impact of jet lag. Have everything ready 24 hours before you leave the house and don’t forget to pack noise-cancelling headphones. They’re the best way to ensure that your sleep cycle doesn’t get disrupted while on a flight.

  • Exercise helps lessen the impact of jet lag to a great extent. So, if you’re on a long-haul flight, remember to take a stroll down the aisle at least once every hour.
  • Dehydration is a cause for several problems and jet lag is certainly one of them, so ensure that you’re keeping yourself hydrated.
  • As tempting as it is to indulge in a drink or two or a rich meal, remember that alcohol worsens dehydration, and when coupled with heavy, greasy food, it can make you feel tired and sluggish as well. So, stick to water and make wise food choices.

Once you land

  • Get as much daylight as possible. As tempting as it may seem to draw your curtains and sleep, daylight helps your body acclimatise to the new time zone better.
  • Start eating three proper meals according to the new time zone, even if you don’t feel hungry.
  • Don’t oversleep because you’ll only feel worse. Even if you’re taking a nap or two during the day, ensure that your total sleeping time doesn’t exceed what you’d usually rest for during the night.
  • Comfortable shoes are an essential for when you’re travelling, so make sure your footwear is bang on.
