Four foods to eat before working out

Eating and working out are two sides of the same coin. Whether High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Cardio or Weight training, it is imperative to prepare the body for the workout by providing it with the right nutrition with the two main food groups being carbs and protein. Eating carbs provides fuel to help intensify the workout. Carbs with a low Glycemic Index i.e. the ones which take a long time to get digested and with lots of fibre work best, and about 30 grams is the perfect quantity. Proteins not only prevent muscle damage but are the building blocks of growth, and about 20 to 40 grams are required. The Label gives you four food choices to be consumed 45 minutes to one hour prior to your workout.

About 3 to 4 egg whites followed by a glass of fresh orange juice provide you with nearly 20 grams of protein and about 35 grams of carbs as well as enough hydration to keep you going at the gym. Egg whites contain all the essential amino acids and provide enough nitrogen for toning up. The carbs and vitamin C in the orange juice fuel a vigorous workout so you can sweat it out better and for longer.

A slice of wholegrain bread slathered with a thin layer of peanut butter makes for a perfect source of carbs, providing you with a burst of energy and protein to help you sustain during the workout.

An apple and one medium-sized banana is another substantial pre-workout snack. The iron in the apple purifies blood while the potassium in the banana is great for nerve and muscle function. This combination will keep your nutrient levels high for the workout.

This is another perfect pre-workout energy source. Eat about five almonds, two walnut halves, one dried fig and a few raisins along with one glass of skimmed milk and you are set for a strenuous workout which will give you maximum results.

Lastly, remember to hydrate with water 20 to 30 minutes before a workout. Water is a transporter of not only nutrients but also accumulated fat. It oxidises cells helping to reduce fat from the body. So have the right snack and drink plenty of water before heading to the gym.
