After delighting golf fanatics across the country with action-packed tournaments for the past three years, the Louis Philippe Cup, India’s only premier professional golf tournament, is now back for yet another nail-biting fourth edition. Scheduled to be held from June 8–13, 2015, at Bengaluru’s sprawling Karnataka Golf Association—one of India’s finest golf courses
—the tournament will see seven teams battle it out in a series spread over five days for the coveted title as well as attractive prize money.
This year’s competing teams comprise DLF Gurgaon, Zion Hills, Jaypee Greens, Dev-Ellora Pune, Navratna Ahmedabad, Take Chennai and Laqshya Mumbai, which will each have one professional and two amateur golfers. A departure from the elimination-style tournament, this year, the teams will take to the course in an all-new game format, the stroke play, wherein the total number of strokes taken on each hole during the series will be taken into consideration and the team with the fewest number of strokes will be declared the winner. The stroke play format is, in fact, also slated to be adopted for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
While teams like Jaypee Greens from Greater Noida, led by pro golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar, and Laqshya Mumbai, led by one of India’s most reputed golf champions Jyoti Randhawa
, appear to be tournament favourites, defending champions Navratna Ahmedabad, with pro golfer Mithun Perera (2014 PGTI Rank 14) this year, and Take Chennai led by 2014 Asian Tour No 11 SSP Chawrasia, are also strong contenders. Also joining the tournament this year is Kapil Dev’s Dev-Ellora Pune, which comprises top-rankers like Siddikur Rahman and Om Prakash Chouhan.
Apart from on-course action that promises to keep spectators glued to their seats, the second round of matches will see the likes of former cricketers Venkatesh Prasad, Sunil Joshi, Nikhil Chopra, EAS Prasanna and Syed Kirmani, commentator and cricket expert Charu Sharma and stand-up comedian Papa CJ indulge in an exciting and competitive round of celebrity golf.
