5 Reasons why you should be a blood donor

On 14 June every year, the World Health Organisation celebrates the World Blood Donor Day to honour regular donors across the world and encourage others to do the same. Studies show that by donating one unit of blood, you can save at least three lives—a fact that becomes all the more crucial in countries like ours, where health is a pressing issue. However, apart from the joy of saving a life, donating blood has also proven to be advantageous for the health of the donor. The Label brings you five ways in which you stand to benefit from being a regular donor.
blood donation reduces the risk of heart disease
#1 Reduces risk of heart disease
Donating blood regularly keeps the iron content of the blood in check. While a certain amount of iron in the blood is necessary for the body, high iron content can have adverse effects on the heart and the circulatory system.
#2 Burns calories
Experts say that by donating one pint of blood, you stand to burn approximately 650 calories. Regular blood donation (once every two-three months, depending upon the donor’s health) can result in a significant and healthy weight loss.
donating blood reduces risk of cancer
#3 Reduces risk of cancer
While research is still going on to understand the relationship between donating blood and reduction in cancer risk, doctors are of the opinion that it has to do with blood donation reducing the iron content of the blood, which, in excess, can cause serious damage to body tissues.
#4 Boosts production of red blood cells
The loss of blood during the donation is immediately compensated for by bone marrow replenishing the lost red blood cells, which means your blood is refreshed every time you donate some.
no greater joy than the joy of giving
#5 Psychological benefits
Last but not the least, there is no greater joy than the joy of giving. The fact that a mere 15–20 minutes of your time every couple of months can make such a lasting difference to another life is capable of bringing you immense happiness and satisfaction; and we can’t stress enough on how imperative that is for your general well-being!
