How Often Should You Wash Your Denims

Are you someone who throws his denims in the washing machine after every wear? Or are you one of those men whose year-old denims have never had a wash? Do your denims really need a wash after every wear or would an annual bathing ritual suffice? The Label tells you how to strike a balance between washing your jeans too much and not at all.

First off, the lesser you wash your denims the better. Denims shape up according to your body. You will notice this when you take off your jeans after wearing them all day long. Your jeans will lose this shape if you wash them after every wear. Also, washing them so often might lead to messing up the dyes in dark wash denims. Another cardinal sin is to throw your denims in a washing machine or washing it in hot water. Both practices make the fibres in the fabric swell up, which makes the yarns tense up and get shorter leading to shrinkage.
how often you should wash denims
How often you wash your jeans should depend on what purpose you wear them for. The dressier pair that you wear to social engagements can be washed lesser than the ones you wear while running chores. It is socially acceptable to wash your jeans every six months; or you could wash them after every four or five wears. Spot-clean isolated spills and stains with a damp sponge and detergent instead of washing it completely.
You should always hand-wash jeans. Turn them inside out and soak them in a tub filled with room temperature water and detergent for about 20 minutes. You do not need to scrub your jeans vigorously. Use a cup of white vinegar to seal the colour in dark wash denims. They might smell a bit funky, but the odour clears up when the jeans are air drying. Do not throw your denims in the dryer after washing them; air dry them instead.
