If you’d like to take a more formal and dapper approach this Diwali, swap your suit jacket with one that has a bandhgala or band collar. It is just as smart, requires only one minor change and looks decidedly ethnic. You can also add a silk pocket square in a colour such as earthy red or rich yellow to enhance the traditional element of the outfit. While a festive dull gold bandhgala is just perfect, a regular navy one works just as well.
The simplest way to channel an ethnic look on traditional day in office without leaving your comfort zone is to dress up a Mandarin collar shirt with a pair of textured shoes. If you can get away with textured slip-ons, even better! Swap your regular trousers for jodhpurs and be sure to pick a shirt with Indian motifs such as paisley.
A bandi jacket is essentially a sleeveless bandhgala waistcoat and is our go-to this festive season. When worn over a shirt or a kurta, it instantly takes your look from everyday office to spectacularly traditional and requires little to no effort. Pick one in an interesting fabric such as silk or velvet and look for details such as ornate buttons for maximum impact.
